My Review: Deadly Proof blog tour and giveaway!

Description:
Tapped as lead counsel in a corporate cover-up lawsuit against Mason Pharmaceutical, Kate Sullivan knows this case could make her career. What really drives her, though, is getting justice for the victims whose lives were ruined by the company’s dangerous new drug. But when a whistleblower turns up dead, it paints a target on the back of everyone involved.

Former Army Ranger turned private investigator Landon James steps in to handle security for Kate. He’s still haunted by mistakes in his past and is determined never to let something like that happen again. But it soon appears someone is willing to do anything–even commit murder–to keep the case from going to trial.

As danger closes in, Landon can’t help but admire Kate’s courage and resolve–but will her determination not to back down become too great of a risk?

My Review: 3.5 stars
I wasn’t quite sure what to think of this book, when I first started it.  Legal thrillers aren’t typically at the top of my list, but I’d heard so many great things about Ms. Dylan’s other books and was intrigued by the mystery, so I curious to give it a go.  I confess that I struggled a bit getting into it, but after a chapter or two, I was hooked!  I couldn’t resist the mystery and finding out what would happen next.

Ms. Dylan is a new-to-me author and I had absolutely no idea what to expect.  I really enjoyed her writing style, how she brought the story to life, and it’s obvious that law is her forte.  I appreciated how she used situations and conversations the characters found themselves in to explain the legalese I didn’t understand, rather than trying to explain every minute detail and slowing the story down.  Though I didn’t always completely understand what they were talking about on that page, it would usually click within that chapter at the very least, as they put into practice what had been described.  I also quite enjoyed the mystery!  It’s not often I’m kept guessing and I so enjoy it when that happens.  Though I did figure out part of it, she threw in a surprise at the end that made so much sense and looking back, I see all of the clues that I’m a little surprised/disappointed I didn’t catch earlier.

Honestly, my only mildly negative comment is that the characters fell a little flat for me.  Though Kate and Landon are the main characters, I didn’t feel as though I got to know them that well.  There were some deeper conversations and they touched on difficult topics such as PTSD and depression, but I still didn’t feel connected to them for most of the story.  I actually connected more with Nicole and Ethan (the opposing counsel) and really looked forward to getting the story from their perspectives.  Though that may just be personal preference.  And I do have to say that despite that, I’m really looking forward to the next book and learning who’s story it’s going to be: her friends, his, a combination of both?  That’s one of my favorite things about a new series - there are so many possibilities!

Overall, though I had no idea what to expect, I found I quite enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next one in the series!
